Servus zusammen,
LG
Ladies and gentlemen,
I like to give you a little feedback about my first time experience to really become a first time Jeep customer for a brand new Jeep Wrangler Rubicon JLU.
For more than a year I was almost mad about reading, learning and watching everything about the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. Yesterday the first visit of my local Jeep dealer came across but in the end I was left behind very disappointed and sad.
I found out, that European/German customers cannot configure their Jeep Wrangler as they would like to, like an American customer could, although the Jeep is built right in the same factory as far as I know. It was hard to believe, that many features of the European Jeep Wrangler cannot be changed at all, although nobody that I know including myself would like to see those on a brand new Wrangler and will be subject to change anyway.
The biggest issue are the tires right from the factory. The Rubicon comes with a stock tire 255 (!) /70 R17 with a M/T tire in Germany.
However, almost every Jeep driver is looking for a bigger tire, even in the US, anything else but definitely not a 255 M/T. 80% of all buyers go for the BF Goodrich A/T K02 285/70 R17. At least that is a tire to work with and is much more suitable for almost every condition.
Surprisingly, this tire is the stock tire in America! For a good reason certainly, it’s simply the best and most suitable tire for a Jeep Wrangler for most conditions to start with.
A German customer like me, is forced to put five brand new 255 stock tires on the garbage to buy the very same tires the American Wranglers are equipped with right from the factory. That is far away from anything like a green procedure or the idea of reducing garbage or saving the planet and feels like a stumbling block from the very beginning for no reason.
I saw the website in the US to configure the Jeep Wrangler. But even the most likely wishlist items like painted fender flares or the option of stitched leather seats aren’t even available in Europe. Why that?
Big question marks in my eyes yesterday. To a European customer the Jeep Wrangler is much more expensive than the same car in the US in the first place. The dealer gave me the impression that I “can” configure my jeep by the option of probably 7,8 or 9 clicks in the program. The truth however is, that the Jeep dealer is just able to select from an existing carpool that is physically available and already in Europe. If you’re lucky there is a car like you wanted it or you have to accept different features, or you leave it at all.
It took some time until he admitted that this is the way it is. But to me, it was not clear in the first place. I told him that I would like to have a brand new car that will be produced in days after I signed the buyers contract. That is because I do not want to have a truly brand new car that is parked for a year or more in a parking lot somewhere. That way I have the chance to circumnavigate the growing pains of a new car in the market and get the latest edition technically evolved right from the factory. For a 60thousand Euro (!) price tag I think that is not too much to ask for.
I have to accept however, that if Jeep says, that the American market is big enough for a well-being and the European market is too small and more or less a side effect for it does not need any enhanced customer friendly features. But why should't it be possible to be able to configure my Jeep as any body else in the US ? But if that is true, the Jeep Wrangler dream has to die. That would be a very sad story indeed, because I would be proud to be an ambassador of the Wrangler in Europe/Germany.
I work close with the one and only importer in Europe for American Native Watercraft Kayaks. But we never get a different product but the very same that is sold in America. And the customers like it a lot.
In the end I’m not talking about different rules and regulation that require some changes like turn signals or the front bumper, that is understood.
Well, maybe that is an idea for the future to be addressed where these marketing issues are discussed. I think it is worth to put an eye on that subject.
Sincerely
